Question 1

Is vintage jewelry worth more than modern jewelry?

Accepted Answer

It depends on the piece. Some vintage jewelry is worth significantly more than a comparable modern piece because of its rarity, craftsmanship, historical significance, or designer provenance. Art Deco and Edwardian pieces, in particular, command strong prices among collectors. However, not all old jewelry is valuable, and condition, materials, and authenticity all play a major role. The only way to know for certain is to have your piece evaluated by a qualified specialist.

Question 2

How do I know if my jewelry is vintage?

Accepted Answer

Look for stylistic clues: filigree work, geometric patterns, floral motifs, and certain stone cuts are all associated with specific eras. Check for hallmarks and maker’s marks on the inside of the band or on clasps and findings. Research the piece’s history if you can. And when in doubt, bring it to a specialist. Diamond & Gold Exchange can date a piece based on construction techniques, metal characteristics, and design elements.

Question 3

Should I restore vintage jewelry before selling?

Accepted Answer

No. As discussed above, cleaning and polishing can reduce the value of a vintage piece by removing patina and obscuring details that experts use to authenticate and date jewelry. If a piece needs structural repair, such as a broken clasp or a missing prong, consult with a specialist before making any changes. When you are working with vintage jewelry buyers like Diamond & Gold Exchange, it’s always better to let them assess the piece in its current state first.

Question 4

What vintage jewelry is most valuable?

Accepted Answer

Signed pieces by major design houses, Art Deco platinum and diamond jewelry, Edwardian filigree pieces, jewelry containing old mine cut or rose cut diamonds, and pieces with natural untreated gemstones tend to command the highest prices. That said, the market is always evolving, and demand can shift. The best way to know what your specific piece is worth right now is to get a current evaluation from a qualified buyer.

Question 5

Do you buy costume vintage jewelry?

Accepted Answer

Diamond & Gold Exchange specializes exclusively in fine jewelry, which means pieces containing precious metals such as gold, silver, and platinum, as well as genuine gemstones. Costume jewelry falls outside the scope of what the team evaluates or purchases. That said, if you have vintage costume pieces, it’s worth doing a little research of your own online before setting them aside. There’s a dedicated collector’s market for certain signed costume jewelry, and you might be pleasantly surprised by what you find.
