Our head diamond appraiser is also a diamond cutter with over 45 years of experience, and he will weigh and assess your stones using GIA standards so we can make you the most competitive offer possible.

How Is Diamond Quality Assessed?

Diamonds are evaluated using consistent, unbiased standards established by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), a non-profit organization widely regarded as the world’s foremost authority on diamond grading. GIA-trained gemologists use specialized equipment to assess each stone based on four key factors, commonly known as the 4 Cs: cut, color, clarity, and carat weight.

What Are The 4 Cs?

Cut refers to how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. Precise craftsmanship in proportioning, symmetry, and polish is what gives a diamond its breathtaking sparkle. A beautifully cut diamond captures and reflects light in a way that makes it truly dazzling, while a poorly cut stone can appear dull and lifeless, even if it is otherwise high quality.

Diamond color refers to the presence or absence of natural color within a stone. The closer a diamond is to being completely colorless, the rarer and more valuable it is. GIA grades diamond color on a scale from D (colorless) to Z (light color).

Clarity refers to the presence of microscopic imperfections within or on the surface of a diamond. These imperfections are known as inclusions (internal) or blemishes (external). Diamonds with few or no imperfections are exceptionally rare and highly valued.
The GIA Scale For Diamond Clarity:

Flawless (FL) No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification.
Internally Flawless (IF) No inclusions visible under 10x magnification.
Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2) Inclusions are extremely difficult to detect, even for skilled graders.
Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2) Inclusions are minor and require effort to see under magnification.
Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2) Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification.
Included (I1, I2, and I3) Inclusions are obvious under magnification and may affect transparency and brilliance.

Carat refers to the unit of measurement used to describe a diamond’s weight. One metric carat equals 200 milligrams, and each carat is divided into 100 points for precise measurement.

What’s Diamond Cut ?

Diamond cut refers to the quality of the craftsmanship used to shape and polish a diamond, including its proportioning, symmetry, and finish. It is cut quality that determines how brilliantly a diamond reflects light.

What’s Diamond Shape?

Diamond shape refers to the geometric silhouette of the stone itself, for example round, oval, heart, marquise, or pear. A diamond can be cut into any shape, but the quality of the cut within that shape is what determines its beauty and value.
